This position is paid through ESSER Grant Funding and is funded through the end of the 2022-2023 school year. This position expires on September 30, 2023 (or for as long as we have federal emergency relief funds to support this grant administration position whichever comes first)

 


PRIMARY PURPOSE:

 

Assist school administration with the overall coordination of mental health support services for general education students and staff. Assist the administration team with determining the appropriate interventions and/or referrals for students and staff. Lead and collaborate with others to promote students academic, social, and mental well being. Function as part of district-level team to formulate and implement preventative measures with the school, student, and parents.

 


QUALIFICATIONS:

 


Education/Certification:

  • Master’s Degree in a Human Services Field (e.g. social services, counselors, health care ot behavioral science) from an accredited college or university
  • Valid Texas license as a master social worker granted by the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners, or Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Thorough demonstrated knowledge of mental health counseling
  • Knowledge of prevention and intervention strategies
  • Knowledge of individual and group counseling skills
  • Strong consultation skills for conferencing with community partners, teachers, parents, and students
  • Awareness and ability to access community resources
  • Ability to manage scheduling
  • Knowledge and skills in casework methods
  • Ability to coordinate trainings for staff, parents and students
  • Ability to present effective and engaging staff development
  • Ability to implement policy and procedures
  • Ability to interpret data
  • Strong organizational, communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
  • Training in TBRI (Trust-Based Relational Intervention) preferred

Experience:

  • Five years of experience in case management, social worker or mental health with some supervisory experience

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

 


Staff/Student Support and Management

  • Coordinate training for teachers, nurses, counselors, principals and all other appropriate personnel on how to recognize and appropriately respond to signs of mental health issues in students.
  • Serve on the district crisis intervention teams and work collaboratively with the Director of Counseling to provide assistance with crisis management.
  • Provide opportunities for parents and students to receive education about signs of mental health issues in students as well as parent support groups.
  • Assist with the design, approval and monitoring of individual/group counseling for grades PK-12.
  • Implement best practice-based culturally competent mental health and substance abuse interventions.
  • Model a best practice-based, culturally competent universal prevention program in each school.
  • Provide social-emotional support and crisis intervention to students
  • Serve as consultant to school personnel regarding students or situations that affect student’s academic or behavioral progress.
  • Develop and assist with implementing plans for students at risk of dropping out.
  • Conduct school based small groups and individual counseling sessions to enhance development of students or staff and provide support in accepting responsibility for their actions, overcoming crisis/traumatic situations, resolving conflict, improving attendance, decision-making skills, etc
  • Conduct campus visits to engage and support the implementation of trauma-informed strategies and TBRI as they relate to mental health and wellness.
  • Contribute to assessments and support plans for students with mental health concerns.
  • Make appropriate referrals for basic needs (food, clothing and shelter).
  • Conduct needs assessments and provide school staff, parents, and students with community resources; coordinate and integrate school and community resources.
  • Assist leadership teams in helping staff members explore mental- health programs and counseling
  • Identify and explore causes of teachers and students’ dysfunction as it relates to home, school and community
  • Provide consultative services for medical, psychiatric, and other tests and examinations that may disclose causes of difficulties and indicate remedial measures

Program Management and Engagement

  • Monitor and support student wellness coordinators, social workers and counselors in problem-solving issues that involve district policies, regulations, ethical standards and state and federal law.
  • Implement clear lines of support and accountability for the school social work program/student wellness program and the provision for optimum use of the student wellness coordinator/school social worker knowledge and skills.
  • Supervise and evaluate the performance of the student wellness coordinator/school social worker and contracted service providers.
  • Utilize school-wide data collection systems to establish researched-based interventions
  • Provide effective and engaging preventative activities and training that incorporate the mission of the district, evaluation outcomes, and input from teachers and others.
  • Demonstrate use of appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and staff engagement.
  • Develop, coordinate and conduct relevant staff in-service and parent training programs.
  • Help the district build and maintain strong relationships with social service and mental health agencies.
  • Provide documented intervention services utilizing evidence based counseling practices.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records and other required documents
    • Utilize a daily sign in sheet for students, parents and staff
    • Document all sessions in the district-provided format by the end of each grading cycle
    • Maintain staff/student support plan roster; Provide evidence based interventions to active staff/students listed on the support plan roster
    • Maintain folders (i.e consent, release of information, contact summary notes, and informal needs assessments/questionnaires)
  • Actively support district goals of prevention to maintain a healthy and safe school environment.
  • Provide direct support to staff as well as essential information to better understand factors (cultural, societal, economic, familial, health, etc.) affecting a student’s performance and behavior.
  • Collaborate with counseling and intervention staff in evaluating and developing programming to meet student and staff needs.

 

  • Implement policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rules, and local board policy in the areas of school counseling and intervention.
  • Compile, maintain, and present all reports, records, and other documents required.
  • Model behaviors, which ensure the development of a district team, focused on problem-solving and meeting student needs for all identified students.
  • Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible and serve as a role model for all district staff.
  • Actively seek training and information, which will enhance skills and knowledge, related to responsibilities

Policy, Reports, and Law

  • Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, professional code of ethics/conduct, and board policy.
  • Adhere to federal and state guidelines for intervention services.
  • Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
  • Provide crisis responses throughout the district when requested by the Crisis Team Leader.
  • Adhere to all crisis protocols and implement protocols with fidelity

Professional Growth and Development

  • Participate in professional development activities to improve skills related to job assignment
  • Attend professional conferences based on licensure/certification

Budget

  • Ensure that selected programs/materials are cost effective and funds are managed prudently by compiling

budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.

Communication

  • Maintain a positive and effective relationship with all stakeholders; effectively communicate with colleagues, students, and parents
  • Demonstrate skill in conflict resolution with administrators, parents, teachers, staff, and community.
  • Monitor professional research and disseminate ideas and information to other professionals.
