General Description:
  • The provider will design (in conjunction with the behavioral health leadership team) and lead the work of implementing support plans for staff at a student, classroom or grade level.
  • The provider will develop, implement and update three-year goal plans for Mental Health and Counseling. Effective Special Service Providers in mental health and counseling professions in the state of Colorado have the knowledge, skills, and commitments needed to provide excellent and equitable learning opportunities and growth for all students.
  • They strive to support growth and development, close achievement gaps and to prepare diverse student populations for postsecondary and workforce success.
  • Effective Special Service Providers in mental health and counseling professions facilitate mastery of skill development in social and emotional competencies, and employ and adjust evidence-based strategies and approaches for students who are not achieving mastery and students who need acceleration.
  • They also develop in students the skills, interests and abilities necessary to be lifelong learners, as well as for democratic and civic participation.
  • Effective Special Service Providers in mental health and counseling professions communicate high expectations to students and their families and utilize diverse strategies to engage them in a mutually supportive learning environment.
  • Because effective Special Service Providers in mental health and counseling professions understand that the work of ensuring meaningful learning opportunities for all students cannot happen in isolation, they engage in collaboration, continuous reflection, on-going learning and leadership within the district and community.
  • Effective Special Service Providers in mental health and counseling professions establish a rapport with parents, students, colleagues, and community professionals, and exhibit knowledge of social and emotional learning competencies and counseling techniques.
  • Effective Special Service Providers in mental health and counseling professions are responsible for using effective counseling techniques.
  • Effective Special Service Providers in mental health and counseling professions maintain a positive attitude and perception about the department and the work.
Job Duties
  • Develop, implement and revise systems of response to support for an individual student, classroom or grade level in the area of mental health and counseling
  • Collaborate with the Mental Health and Counseling leadership team to develop and support implementation and revision to systems of response to buildings for an individual student, classroom or grade level support
  • Provide professional development, planning, and support to specific teachers or building teams in the development and implantation of support plans to include side by side support within a gradual release model
  • Maintain Training of Trainer (TOT) certification in all required areas including Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (CPI), Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), PREPaRE (Prevent, reaffirm, evaluate, provide, respond, examine) and Nerosequential Model of Education (NME) and provide training in those areas to APS staff
  • Connect staff to resources, materials and knowledgeable others to build networks and empower them to support student skill acquisition
  • Collect and maintain data on the effectiveness of coaching and training support.
  • Inform the Mental Health and Counseling leadership team on updated research, program effectiveness.
  • Provide recommendations and needs assessment to the behavioral health leadership team on new systems or updates to current systems
  • Conduct observations of building and district implementation and provide feedback on the fidelity of implementation.
  • Implement and manage one’s own sustainable caring plan and support others in the development and follow through of sustainable caring plans
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Education and Licensure
  • Minimum Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in psychology, social work or counseling
  • Holds a Colorado Special Services Professional license in the area of school psychology, school social work, or school counseling or is currently eligible for one
  • Training of Trainer (TOT) certification in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) within 6 months of hire
  • PREPaRE within 6 months of hire
    • P—Prevent and PREPaRE for psychological trauma
    • R—Reaffirm physical health and perceptions of security and safety
    • E—Evaluate psychological trauma risk
    • P—Provide interventions
    • a—and
    • R—Respond to psychological needs
    • E—Examine the effectiveness of crisis prevention and intervention (PREPaRE), Neurosequential Model of Education (NME) and Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (CPI)
  • A completed Human Resources file including transcripts, internship verification, previous work experience

Strategic Plan:
The SSP in a mental health and counseling profession shall identify the development needs of students, shall maintain a productive learning environment, and shall work collaboratively to support the priorities of the Strategic Plan.
Condition of Employment:
As a condition of employment, the individual selected for this position will be expected to complete the APS-sponsored Linguistically Diverse Educator (LDE) Certificate Program within the first three years of employment.

The person filling this position will be exposed to traumatic stories, research, and scenarios daily. As a result, a sustainable care plan will be developed by the employee and monitored by the direct supervisor. In addition, this person must understand how to support others exposed to this level of trauma as well including other professionals working in the district. This person must understand how to support others exposed to this level of trauma as well as including other professionals working in the district. In addition, this person must have a basic understanding of vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue, and job burnout; as well as general district and community supports.
