Position
Under the direction of the Dean of Counseling, this position will have the following general responsibilities: provide personal short-term and crisis counseling services through direct contact with students individually, in groups and screenings; provide direction for programs and services; deliver instruction; develop student, faculty and staff training/workshops and develop student, faculty and staff educational/resource materials. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, providing counseling services in which the student is assisted in problem resolution, crisis intervention, and assessing, planning and implementing his/her immediate and long-range goals; provide referrals in which the student is empowered to identify and utilize college and community support services; provide personal counseling in which the student is assisted with personal, family or other social concerns. This position will work closely with the student health center and will supervise a training program for graduate students gaining practicum or internship experience in personal counseling.

  • This position is dependent upon categorical funding.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Responsible for personal counseling functions. Support students’ career exploration and program selection, adjustment to college, and other developmental problems. Understand the general counselor’s role.
  • Provide referrals to students regarding resources, opportunities, and assistance available to them at the College and in the community.
  • Supervise a graduate student internship or practicum training program for personal counseling.
  • Respond to mental health emergencies on campus.
  • Maintain records and submit reports according to published deadlines.
  • Develop campus understanding of the mental health counselor role.
  • Function as a team member of the counseling department; provide consultation and training.
  • Continue in related professional career development while employed at Ohlone College.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience in supervising and coordinating a training program for graduate students.
  • Two years counseling experience in higher education institution.
  • Teaching in the classroom or in presenting workshops/seminars.
  • Experience developing/coordinating events, and/or programs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Evidence of ability to work successfully in a team environment.
  • Demonstration of a pattern of participation in professional growth activities
  • Familiarity with disability legislation.
Minimum Qualifications
  • License to provide mental health counseling and trainee supervision by the State of California.
  • Master’s degree in counseling, clinical psychology, social work, OR the equivalent.* (Note: a license as a Marriage, Family, and Child Counselor is an alternative qualification for this discipline, pursuant to Title 5, Section 53410.1.).
  • Familiarization with young adult college students is a requirement.
  • Experience with crisis management and evaluation of suicide risks and safety.
  • Commitment to community college goals/objectives of being an equity-based and anti-racist institution, and providing quality programs and services for culturally, socio-economically, ethnically, and academically diverse students and students with disabilities; personal qualities to work effectively and with sensitivity in a multicultural environment; awareness of and commitment to the needs of non-traditional and/or re-entry students with diverse abilities and interests.
  • Must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practices.
