Job Overview

The Boston Public Health Commission works to protect, promote, and preserve the health and wellbeing of all Boston residents, particularly the most vulnerable. Since 1984, Commission’s Homeless Services Bureau, has been a leader in serving the city’s most vulnerable homeless individuals through emergency shelter, workforce supports, and housing services. Utilizing a Housing First framework and working to ensure that homelessness in the city of Boston is rare, brief, and one-time, the Commission works to quickly house individuals experiencing homelessness and then provides in-home, community-based stabilization to ensure that individuals do not return to homelessness.

 

Serving Ourselves (SOS) provides paid job training, life skills development and comprehensive social services to homeless adults in the City of Boston. These efforts are supported through the programming of the Career Center where participants receive case management services to support their income maximization and educational/professional goals and assure that participants have identified pathways out of shelter. Additionally, the Career Center provides individual training, group classroom instruction, and referrals to community-based education and employment resources to increase job readiness.

 

The SOS Case Management Assistant Coordinator works with SOS participants to identify job placement and readiness goals and supports participants as they work towards goal completion. SOS Case Managers also assist the Career Center Manager in identifying participant life/employment skill development needs, and the facilitation of related groups and classes in the Career Center.

 

DUTIES:

  • Responsible for screening, assessment, and referral and placement services to homeless clients in the Serving Ourselves (SOS) program.
  • Provides counseling, crisis intervention, and case management services to program participants.
  • Develops and monitors individual service plans, teaches life skills, and assists in job search and placement.
  • Ensures participants have identified pathways to housing by facilitating linkage to housing services.
  • Makes appropriate referrals and maintains contact with internal and community social services.
  • Works in multi-disciplinary team with other shelter-based services including work rehabilitation, housing placement, and behavioral health to coordinate client services and employment.
  • Provides group and individual instruction in resume writing, interviewing, career counseling and life skills.
  • Assists in the development and co-facilitation of support groups and educational sessions for program participants.
  • Responsible for maintenance of case management files, records, and annual report data; including HMIS record-keeping.
  • Attends and co facilitates weekly case conference meetings, and attends other meetings and trainings as assigned.
  • Provides on-going support and follow up to graduates of programs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with minimum one (1) year related experience OR college level course work equivalent to an Associate degree with two (2) years human service experience OR High School diploma/GED and three (3) years’ experience may be substituted for entrance requirement.
  • Previous experience working with homeless, diverse ethnic, racial, and low-income population with understanding of mental health, substance abuse and recovery issues.
  • Commitment to racial equity, housing first, trauma-informed care, and harm reduction.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Strong written/verbal communication skills and program development abilities
  • Understanding of vocational rehabilitation counseling.
  • Ability to facilitate support groups and workshops.
  • Knowledge of Boston area social service.
  • Bilingual candidates preferred.

City of Boston Residency Required, A Criminal Offenders Records Information request must be completed for this position.
