Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center, Indiana’s first community mental health center, provides comprehensive care for emotional and behavioral problems, including severe mental illness and substance abuse. The Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center offers both inpatient and outpatient services, including several outreach centers as well as clinic- and community-based services.

Job Role Summary

The Prevention and Recovery Center, Coordinated Specialty Care (PARC CSC) provides early screening, prevention, and intervention services for individuals ages 14 – 35 who have experienced a first episode of psychosis (FEP) within the past 5 years. PARC CSC provides comprehensive clinical services with multidisciplinary teams evaluating and addressing every participant’s individual needs using the OnTrack model of care. Three clinical teams serve program participants, each comprised of a psychiatrist, psychologist, therapist, case manager, nurse, clinical pharmacist, supportive employment and education specialist (SEES), peer specialist, and team lead. PARC CSC aims to improve functioning, promote wellness and recovery, and ultimately improve outcomes for young people with psychotic disorders.



The PARC CSC Certified Recovery Specialist (Peer Specialist) assists consumers in articulating personal goals for recovery, determining reasonable and holistic steps toward recovery, identifying barriers to recovery goals, identifying personal strengths in daily living and recovery skills, and building social and life skills through working in partnership and collaboration.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Builds connections with consumers and families through sharing experiences, listening, and collaboration
  • Assists in engages consumers in PARC CSC services
  • Supports consumers and families in at enrollment and throughout their program involvement
  • Promotes hope and recovery through the use of their own personal recovery story
  • Co-creates and builds wellness tools with consumers
  • Observes and reinforces positive progress that consumers make toward recovery goals
  • Teaches problem solving skills
  • Teaches consumers to identify and combat negative self-talk; how to identify and overcome fears
  • Supports the education/employment choices consumers make and assists them in overcoming these related anxieties and conflicts
  • Represents the needs and perspectives of the consumer
  • Utilizes selective self-disclosure about their own lived experience with mental health problems, substance use, and other life aspects
  • Maintains effective coping and self-help techniques
  • Collaborates with other multidisciplinary team members
  • Continues to develop professional skill by maintaining certification through required coursework
  • Participates in activities related to community education and awareness of recovery and stigma reduction
  • Assists non consumer staff in identifying program elements that are supportive or destructive to recovery, and helps to shape the team’s culture to one that promotes person-centered, recovery oriented, strengths-based service delivery
  • Attends relevant seminars, staff in-service trainings as offered
  • Participates in routine supervision

Job Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Experience in a human services area, teaching and observing
  • Certified Recovery Specialist (CRS) certification required; Must be able to verify completion of state approved training program
  • Valid Indiana driver’s license that meets the Eskenazi Health’s driving policy requirement
  • Possess the ability and willingness to disclose personal recovery story (where appropriate) for the purposes of empowerment
  • Have excellent judgement skills in order to understand boundaries when working with clients of mental health services
  • Be someone who has made good progress towards their own recovery, with demonstrated interpersonal communications skills
  • Ability to empathize with, relate to, and effectively work with participants of mental health services

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrates flexibility and an openness to learning
  • Relates well to persons of all ages
  • As much as possible, the Peer Specialist should understand the culture of the community in which the team is based
  • Basic knowledge of behavioral health
  • Knowledge of:

o Community resources
o Patient rights and responsibilities
o Certified recovery specialist code of ethics

  • Experience or demonstrated competency through orientation and education on the ability to offer support for clients under the influence of substances and management of a safe environment
  • Meets the following basic competencies:

o Basic first aid/CPR
o Mental health and addictions
o Documentation and billing practice
o Confidentiality process and procedure
o Annual education
o Legal issues
o OBHP eligible
