Position Summary
The Westminster Counseling Center is excited to add a counselor to our small and highly supportive clinical team. We are a curious, integrated, and interdisciplinary team consisting of a: PhD Psychologist, CMHC and a LCSW. A Counselor in the Westminster College Counseling Center provides counseling services to meet the growing needs of our student population, including but not limited to historically underrepresented including: students of color, LGBTQ+, first generation, students with physical, mental or developmental disabilities and international students. Working in the Counseling Center with a 9 month, 40-hours per week schedule, the Counselor position works closely with offices falling under the Division of Student Affairs and reports directly to the Director of the Counseling Center.
The Westminster Counseling Center supports student development, connection and purpose. We offer compassionate counseling in an inclusive environment that promotes hope, healing and well-being.

The Counseling Center supports student success by offering: mental health support services for individuals and groups experiencing acute or chronic psychological distress; outreach programs; and consultation that aid in the achievement of academic and personal goals. All services delivered through trauma informed and multicultural lenses.

Primary Responsibilities

 

Responsibility
Provide Direct Service to Students
Description
  • Conduct psychosocial intake assessments.
  • Provide ongoing individual counseling sessions for students.
  • Share coverage of crisis intervention response with counseling center staff during office hours.
  • Provide crisis/triage assessment and respond to students as needed.
  • Co facilitate group counseling.
  • Provide advocacy services for students.
  • Refer and connect students to community mental health resources as needed.
  • Seek out consultation on a regular basis to improve quality of care.
  • Deliver counseling services through cultural competency lens and commit to ongoing training in serving student intersectional identities.
Responsibility
Campus and Community Outreach and Collaboration
Description
  • Provide education and resources related to mental health and wellness to groups of students, faculty and staff.
  • Coordinate care with offices on campus to provide concurrent efforts in areas that relate to mental/physical health and academic success including: student health services, academic advising, disability services and residential living.
  • Consult with faculty/staff as well as parents regarding student mental health concerns.
  • Respond to campus emergencies and crisis situations, providing appropriate support to students, faculty and staff.

Participate in Training and Supervision
Description
  • Provide clinical supervision/consultation and support the learning of master level trainees completing internship in our office.
  • Support the collective learning environment by participating in ongoing inhouse and community education.
  • Participate in on-going professional education and training to keep abreast of issues related to counseling services and college students’ needs.
  • Maintain a high standard of professional ethics consistent with the guidelines of the American Counseling Association, National Association of Social Workers and the American Psychological Association.

Qualifications

 

Required Qualifications
  • A master’s degree or higher; license eligible in the state of Utah as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Psychologist, or Clinical Mental Health Counselor. License in one of these mental health areas required within approximately 2 years of hire. Provisionally licensed people welcome to apply.
  • Two years related experience and/or training.
  • Possess knowledge of college student mental health and student affairs in higher education.
  • Have a working knowledge of young adult development.
  • Competency to work with diverse student population and exploration of intersecting identities.
  • Be student-centered, with a strong sense of personal integrity, have a non-biased approach to advocacy support, and an understanding of issues affecting marginalized students.
  • Dedication to continuing education and consultation around development of self awareness.
  • Work well in a team environment; maintain a professional demeanor and have an enthusiastic attitude.
  • Ability to respond to student crisis and make an appropriate plan for follow up.
  • Demonstrate excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Comfort with public speaking and giving presentations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Practice therapy from trauma informed and multicultural perspectives.
  • Experience working in a college or university counseling center setting, and emphasis on dealing with depression, anxiety, identity exploration and stress issues is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working on a college/university campus strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of utilizing social media platforms and comfort with posting to Counseling Center Instagram.
  • Experience teaching in higher education.
  • Current licensure in the state of Utah as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Psychologist, or Clinical Mental Health Counselor preferred.
