Overview

The Forensic Psychologist performs court ordered evaluations, commitment and recommitment evaluations pursuant to the provisions of G.L. c. 123. He/she evaluates individuals with suspected mental health difficulties often around issues of Competence to Stand Trial (CST) or Criminal Responsibility (CR), aid-in-sentencing, and civil commitment related to mental illness.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Ph.D. or Psy. D. in psychology from an accredited university.

Experience:

  • Three years of experience working in a psychiatric hospital or correctional facility is preferred.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Current license as a Psychologist in Massachusetts
  • Designated Forensic Psychologist (DFP) or working towards becoming a DFP

Responsibilities

  • Performs court ordered evaluations, commitment and recommitment evaluations pursuant to the provisions of G.L. c. 123.
  • Evaluates individuals with suspected mental health difficulties often around issues of Competence to Stand Trial (CST) or Criminal Responsibility (CR), aid-in-sentencing, and civil commitment related to mental illness.
  • Conducts inpatient examinations of defendants on issues primarily pertaining to CST and CR and coordinates with inpatient treatment teams and the courts.
  • Completes other forensic evaluations that include competence to stand trial updates and Independent Forensic Risk Assessments, which consist of risk assessment evaluations.
  • Supervises and trains psychology students, provides training and education to the rest of the clinical team as needed.
  • Provides expert testimony to the court.
  • Completes thorough, accurate, and timely documentation of evaluations that are consistent with professional standards and hospital procedures.
  • Makes psychological and commitment decisions that are sound, culturally sensitive, and based in empirical evidence and consistent with forensic best practices.
  • Exhibits excellent time management and professional communication skills.
  • Acts as a consultant on forensic issues to the hospital as needed, and engages in the professional development of forensic staff and trainees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
