Job Summary

We are seeking a part-time research assistant (20 hrs/week) to join our research team at Joint Base Elemendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, AK, to investigate the impact of music therapy on chronic pain in military personnel. Applicants should have knowledge and skills in recruitment and enrollment of human subjects, informed consent procedures, clinical trial data collection, data entry, and data management. The research assistant will also participate in team meetings, assist with coding of qualitative data and writing of study reports.

This position is supported fully by external funds; therefore, any offer of employment and the continuation of employment are contingent on receipt of those external funds.

Essential Functions

  • Assist with recruitment of study participants.
  • Conduct study screens and obtain informed consent.
  • Assist with maintenance of IRB regulatory documents.
  • Adhere to study protocols.
  • Conduct outcome assessments and enter data.
  • Track enrollment and assessment completion statistics.
  • Assist with secure data storage and management as per study protocol.
  • Conduct semi-structured interviews with study participants.
  • Assist music therapist with preparing session-related materials.
  • Schedule treatment and outcome assessment sessions and place reminder calls or texts to study participants.
  • Search pertinent scientific literature as needed.
  • Assist with coding of qualitative data.
  • Prepare reports with local feasibility data.
  • Assist with other study-related tasks as needed.

The successful candidate will also demonstrate knowledge, skills and abilities related to the following competencies:

Technical knowledge/Experience:

Comfortable working with the following computer software: Word, Excel, SPSS, and RedCap

Problem solving and analysis:

Identifies areas of improvement and recommends solutions to improve study implementation quality; makes appropriate decisions related to established research protocols; and demonstrates ability to pay close attention to detail in completing research coordination tasks.

Communication skills: presents information effectively and clearly both in oral and written forms of communication; communicates effectively with research team members and site staff.

Interpersonal skills: Collaborates with diverse people in a respectful manner; works collaboratively with research team members and staff; functions in accordance with established protocols; and always projects a positive attitude.

Team work: Establishes and maintains beneficial working relationships with peers, colleagues and communicates with research team members.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree, Psychology or health-related field
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience
  • Master’s Degree preferred
  • Bachelor’s in Psychology or health-related field
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as research assistant in clinical trials
  • Experience with screening and consenting human research participants
  • Experience conducting outcome assessments and managing research data
  • Experience conducting semi-structured interviews
  • Experience maintaining research data records as per study protocols
  • Experience with IRB-related documentation
  • Outstanding personal initiative and communication skills (oral and written English)
  • Comfortable working with the following computer software: Word, Excel, SPSS, and RedCap

Preferred Qualification

  • CPR certified preferred
  • CITI training certifications preferred
