Position Overview
Under direct supervision performs beginning level social work duties; receives training in social work services and carries a progressively larger caseload subject to close guidance and review by the supervisor or more experienced social worker. Utilizes manual communication skills with individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Job Responsibilities
1. Provides individual counseling of Illinois School for the Deaf (ISD) students who are deaf or hard of hearing to assist them in achieving their highest potential.

2. Participates in interdisciplinary, interdepartmental, or interagency conferences and staffing, including Individual Education Plans and Eligibility Reviews to share pertinent information, professional impressions and recommendations and implements designated recommendations regarding individual students.

3. Provides group therapy to select groups of students to enhance social skill development and/or develop more effective copying strategies and/or problem resolution skills resultant of dealing with new experiences, maladjustment in peer groups, interpersonal, familial or environmental stressors.

4. Serves as a consultant to academic and/or residential staff to work cooperatively to identify behaviors.

5. Provides supportive relationship and counseling to families of students to aid in effective communication between child and family and to assist in establishing and maintaining positive school-home relationships.

6. Completes required reports for individual case files and prepares annual summary for supervisor.

7. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Requires a master’s degree in social work from a recognized college or university.

2. Requires the School Social Worker Endorsement from the Illinois State Board of Education.

3. Requires the ability to communicate in sign language at the appropriate level.

Conditions of Employment

1. Requires the ability to meet all agency vaccine/health-related policies and guidance.

2. Requires the ability to pass the IDHS background check.

3. Requires ability to pass a drug screen. On January 1, 2020, the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act made it legal for residents over the age of 21 to produce, consume and sell cannabis in Illinois. Please note that although the law has changed, the Department will continue to enforce the Department’s zero tolerance Drug Testing policy. The use of unauthorized drugs, including cannabis, by an employee, regardless of the position held is prohibited.

Work Hours: 8:00AM – 4:30PM. Monday-Friday
