GENERAL DESCRIPTION
:

The social worker assigned to the Department of Psychiatry’s Crisis Call Center, provides crisis phones services to individuals seeking assistance with a variety of psycho-social and/or mental health concerns. Through this service, the social worker provides crisis intervention, evaluation, and referral services to persons with behavioral health needs who are enrolled as a patient at URMC or a community member seeking services. He/ She collaborates with hospital and other community institutions and groups, relative to the psychosocial needs of the patient and family.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Administrative (10 %)

  • Acts as a liaison between the Mobile Crisis Team, Crisis Line Services, CPEP, Social Work Division, Department of Psychiatry, Strong Memorial Hospital, and community agencies.
  • Attends monthly Social Work Division and Program Staff Meetings.
  • Ensures that Social Work Division, Department, and Hospital policies and procedures are implemented with regard to professional practice and patient care.
  • Participates in activities of the Social Work Division including, but not limited to timely completion of statistical reports/forms, time sheets and other Hospital or Division forms; Hospital and Division mandatory in-service training programs and UHS reviews.
  • Subscribes to the Departmental goal of creating a culturally competent environment by treating patient, families, trainees, and co-workers in a sensitive manner with appropriate attention to cultural differences.
  • Participates in available cultural competency events and training appropriate to job duties, and meeting annual training expectations.

Clinical (90%)

  • Under general direction and with considerable latitude for independent judgment. Provides phone crisis services through effective evaluation and triage of calls received.
  • Provides psychosocial assessment to patients via phone who are at exceptional psychosocial risk, as appropriate
  • Answers Crisis Call Center phone line in a timely manner collects a brief history and determines, based on initial assessment, if the caller is at risk for harm to self and others. Follows designated workflows outlined in the Crisis Call Manual to provide each caller with the appropriate level of care.
  • Meets minimum target for units of service-related to calls-as set by the Senior Crisis Call Center Mental Health Therapist.
  • Establishes and completes loop of communication with current providers or community services worker by maintaining cooperative working relationships with community healthcare agencies, as well as professional staff of the Medical Center and University.
  • Completes all required documentation, to include documentation of interventions in patient’s chart in compliance Division, Department, Hospital policy. Ensures compliance with Office of Mental Health (OMH) regulations for patient care.
  • Ensures that proper intervention and referral protocols are followed with respect to child abuse, domestic violence, and/or consultation with specialty clinics, and referrals both within and outside of URMC.
  • Responsible for decision-making regarding appropriate referrals and collaborates with referral source and other professionals, both internal and external throughout patient care activities. Mobilizes family and natural support networks when necessary. Makes referrals to inpatient mental health rehabilitation programs, as needed.
  • Coordinates with support staff regarding patient scheduling, fees, and insurance issues. May assist RCMCT Coordinator with staff scheduling, as it relates to triage and assignment of referrals.
  • Participates in all Quality Improvement activities, as deemed appropriate.

Teaching (NE)

Based on experience and as determined by the social work supervisor may supervise social work graduate students, psychiatric residents, medical students, and family medicine residents assigned to the Psychiatric Emergency Program. Supervision relates to psychosocial assessment and crisis intervention with patients and family

Research (NE)

The social worker may participate in social work and or interdisciplinary research endeavors as determined by the social work supervisor, in consultation with the Social Work Clinical Manager in Psychiatry.

 


PROFESSIONAL SUPERVISION, ACCOUNTABILITY, AND EVALUATION
:

Supervision/Consultation

The social worker’s professional performance is supervised by a Social Work Division supervisor who is licensed by the State of New York.

Accountability

  • The social worker is accountable administratively and clinically to his/her social work supervisor (and through him/her to the Social Work Division Clinical Manager in Psychiatry) for provision of social work services, and adherence to Social Work policies, procedures, and standards of professional conduct. The social worker’s job performance must conform to the expectations set forth in the position description.
  • The social worker is accountable to the Coordinator of the Rochester Community Mobile Crisis Team and Crisis Clinical Project Manager / Senior Therapist for providing professional services in accordance with the policies and standards established by the Program and the Department of Psychiatry.

Evaluation

Social work evaluations are conducted annually by the social worker’s supervisor, with commentary from the Crisis Call Line Director. Salary and promotional recommendations are made by the social worker’s supervisor in consultation with the appropriate Social Work Division personnel. Salary increases and professional recommendations are subject to guidelines established by the Social Work Division, Strong Memorial Hospital and the University of Rochester.

 


POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
:

The social worker who occupies this position must have a MSW from an accredited social work graduate program and New York State Social Work license. They must become a licensed Social Worker within eighteen months of employment. Computer literacy preferred.

POSITION DESCRIPTION MAINTENANCE:

This position description is reviewed annually by the social worker and his/her supervisor. Position review provides opportunity for comment from the Crisis Call Line Director and for updating, as needed. Similarly, if a new social worker is hired for the position, a review and update of the position description should occur. Changes in the position description are recommended by the supervisor, in consultation with Crisis Call Line Director. Any position description modifications are authorized by the Social Work Division Clinical Manager for Psychiatry.
