Job Summary

As part of an interdisciplinary team, the Substance Use Counselor provides comprehensive substance use assessment, participates in treatment planning, and offers individual counseling and group consultation for substance use concerns. This includes working with those who have substance use disorders (in addition to the primary psychiatric disorder for which they are in treatment) as well as those who have been adversely affected by another’s substance use.
The Substance Use Counselor helps organize and implement educational presentations for staff and patients and contributes to development of a well-informed, safe, collaborative working environment. The Substance Use Counselor works in the therapeutic milieu to develop connections with patients to facilitate their availability when issues related to substances arise.
This is an onsite in-person position as the role requires direct patient contact.
Qualifications include:

  • Certification in Alcohol and Drug Counseling strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in psychology or related field required. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience working with substance use or dual-diagnosis patient population.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively, both independently and with others.
  • Possess the ability to be aware of the various dimensions of diversity, including gender, race, identity, and ethnicity.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to tolerate anxiety and to remain effective in stressful situations.
  • Ability to use computer, telephone and other office equipment.
  • May be required to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to climb stairs and move intermittently throughout the Center.
