Mental Health Counseling Techniques

Treating people who are struggling with their mental health requires forming a deep understanding of their personal background and family history. A person’s personal experiences and family history can impact how well they can cope with daily stressors, as well as if they use drugs and alcohol to cope. Often a person will self-medicate with drugs and alcohol before they seek counseling, not realizing they are only worsening their situation.

Counselors use various techniques to get to the root cause of the problem and help their patients process their feelings without any negative thoughts or behaviors. Some of the mental health counseling techniques they use include:

  • Psychodynamic counseling
  • Interpersonal counseling
  • Humanistic/client-centered counseling
  • Existential therapy
  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy
  • Mindfulness-based counseling
  • Rational-emotion therapy
  • Holistic therapy
