Types of Outpatient Programs in Houston

Addiction affects approximately 20 million Americans a year, but no two of those 20 million are exactly the same. Some people started drinking to ease their social anxiety as teenagers. Some got hooked on OxyContin prescribed by their doctor after major surgery. Others used heroin or cocaine to self-medicate challenging mental health issues, such as depression or PTSD. There are as many stories as there are people who struggle. Those who are fortunate enough to realize they have a problem and can look for help do not have the same stories either. That’s why there are so many options for addiction treatment with mental health professionals. For many, outpatient programs are ideal, whether it’s a low-intensity program, an intensive outpatient program, or partial hospitalization.

Joining the mental health career field in one of the several jobs at outpatient institutions can be a rewarding, enriching move in your professional life. Finding a new career in this field has never been easier, thanks to Behavioral Health Jobs. Browse hundreds of jobs at all experience levels and upload your resume today to get started.

Outpatient Addiction Treatment Programs

There are three primary kinds of outpatient rehab that exist on an ascending scale of time commitment.

  • Outpatient treatment program – Offers you the flexibility to continue meeting your commitments to work and family while engaging in rehab for your addiction. You live at home and spend between three to six, sometimes up to ten, hours in treatment per week.
  • Intensive outpatient program (IOP) – This is a step up from a standard outpatient program, requiring a minimum of 10 to 15 hours per week. It is a good alternative to a residential program when you need more care than an outpatient program.
  • Partial hospitalization program (PHP) – This is the highest level of care you can receive for addiction while living at home. The time commitment is 30 hours a week, on average.

Benefits of Intensive Outpatient Programs and Partial Hospitalization

At the start of their recovery journey, many people dread unscheduled time while seeking balance in a life of sobriety. Struggling with addiction without treatment and maintaining your normal home life is hard. An outpatient program can help bridge the gap between daily routines and addiction treatment.

The treatment time for each program will be the primary factor to consider when looking for outpatient treatment. An IOP will require much less time than a PHP. While you are in treatment at either an IOP or PHP, you will be in a trigger-free environment surrounded by professionals who are experts in addiction recovery and peers who are experiencing the journey alongside you.

Outpatient programs are ideal if you qualify for residential care but do not want to live at the facility and have a strong support group at home. The extremely high concentration of time in a PHP is as close to an inpatient rehab program as you can get while still sleeping in your own bed.
