Job Overview

Bluestone Child & Adolescent Psychiatric Hospital is seeking dynamic healthcare professionals interested in bringing psychiatric care to a new level for children ages 6-17. Working in a brand new, 12 bed state-of-the-art facility, Bluestone staff will have a unique ability to direct patient care, employ best practices, and join a care network that promotes the best long-term outcomes for patients.

Job Summary: Expressive Therapists (including music, art, expressive, and recreational therapists as well as certified occupational therapy assistants) are part of the interdisciplinary patient treatment team and are responsible for planning and facilitating therapeutic groups and activities. Expressive Therapists conduct patient assessments, participate in the treatment plan process, and create medically- and socially- appropriate activities for the patients in order to assist in patients’ physical, social and emotional wellbeing.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs an initial patient assessment upon admission and reassessments as per policy.
  • Creates a plan of care appropriate for the patient based on the patient’s initial assessment and progression, age, diagnosis and developmental level.
  • Ability to revise plans of care as indicated by the patient’s response to treatment and evaluates overall plan daily for effectiveness.
  • Plans, prepares and organizes group or individual expressive therapy activities appropriate for the milieu and meeting the needs of the patients.
  • Provides care appropriate to condition for pediatric or adolescent population.
  • Documents patient progress, participation and response to activities appropriately in the medical record in accordance with current standards and policies.
  • Observes and communicates pertinent information regarding patient mental status and behavior, occurrences, and/or negative response to treatment or intervention to physician and/or appropriate health care team members.
  • Engages in therapeutic relationships that focus on patient needs and provides a structured process for patients to reach objectives outlined in the plan of care
  • Coordinates and supervises patient care as necessary.
  • Utilize verbal and physical de-escalation as warranted in order to keep patients safe and remain current in warranted certification and training.
  • Demonstrates all applicable competencies for the position and participates in periodic re-evaluation of such competencies.
  • Communicates appropriately and clearly to the Director of Clinical Services, physicians, and co-workers.
  • Concurs with members of the treatment team for the benefit of the patient.
  • Consults other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs.
  • Treats patients and families with respect and dignity; provides emotional support.
  • Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.
  • Functions as a patient and family advocate at all times.
  • Orients new staff members and volunteers.
  • Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
  • Maintains a good working relationship within the department and with other departments.

Education/Licensure/Skills/Experience Requirements:

  • All Bluestone Child & Adolescent Hospital employees must have a full COVID-19 vaccination or exemption.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institute Must have one of the following qualifications:
  • Certified or registered by the national expressive arts therapist association, certification board for music therapists, American arts therapy association, American dance therapy association, or is licensed, certified or registered by another recognized state or national body to practice expressive therapy;
  • Registered by the Ohio recreational therapy registration board or certified by the national council for therapeutic recreation certification; or is licensed, certified or registered by another recognized state or national body to practice recreational therapy; or
  • Certified occupational therapy assistant.
  • A minimum of one (1) year experience with at-risk youth, developmental disabilities, autism or psychiatric/behavioral health nursing highly desirable.
  • Additional languages in addition to English preferred.
