Behavioral Health Professional

Perform behavioral health professional services for the approximately 1900 Soldiers in the Maine Army National Guard (MEARNG) to assist in the behavioral health medical readiness operations and actions across the full medical readiness spectrum.

Providing suggested methods to improve the utilization of available behavioral health resources within the MEARNG in order to seamlessly follow up on all pending and future medical actions required to assist in the determination of medical readiness of all MEARNG units.

Further actions require capture, definition, tracking and resolution of all pending behavioral health medical issues for MEARNG Soldiers. These actions are critical to improve deployment readiness and provide the proactive support our service members (SM) and their families thereby promoting mental fitness and personal wellness for operational readiness and reintegration to civilian life.

Education / License / Insurance / Background

  • Required:
  • Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) or
  • License in Clinical Social Work (LCSW)
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience with knowledge of military culture and experience collaborating with social service agencies to integrate resources, plan, and deliver comprehensive services.
  • Provide their own personal professional liability insurance.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel and is familiar with the use of MODS and MEDCHART systems.

  • Support and Coordinate mental fitness and wellness for operational readiness and work with the DSS to suggest methods to improve and maintain systems for identifying and resolving soldiers’ behavioral health concerns.
  • Coordinate with existing resources to include but not limited to traditional behavioral health trained soldiers within the MEARNG, civilian behavioral health personnel within the OSS, family programs, and substance abuse. Through working with these existing resources, shall suggest methods to improve the current system for referrals of soldiers and/or family members to the behavioral health components of the psychological, family, social, spiritual, and emotional support programs available to service members (SM) and their families using Military Treatment Facilities (MTF), VA, network Tri-Care provider, and non-network providers.
  • Make recommendations to the OSS and the DSS office with the development of a Creative Action Plan (CAP) to promote psychological health and wellness and the promotion of counseling and treatment services.
  • Provide recommendations to update the database of providers for referrals, compromised of licensed and credentialed civilian behavioral health professionals who meet minimal training requirements and demonstrate knowledge of military culture, assessment, and treatment of the type of behavioral health needs common to a SM.
  • Perform initial and follow-up SM screening evaluation, utilizing information from clinical interviews, non-psychometric tests, and collateral sources, as appropriate.
  • Make recommendations to the OSS and the DSS office with the development of a Creative Action Plan to promote psychological health and wellness and the promotion of counseling and treatment services.
  • Determine a provisional diagnosis and formulate appropriate treatment plan.
  • Inform OSS of all recommended significant modifications in policies or practices, as related to behavioral health.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships at multiple levels within the MEARNG, including both Army and Air National Guard.
  • Develop local resources that provide support to MEARNG members and their families in relation to mental, behavioral or emotional crisis.
  • Track SM’s in Medical Operational Data System (MODS) and Medical Electronic Data (for) Care History and Readiness Tracking (MEDCHART) applications. 5
  • Case Manage Behavioral Health Cases of Soldiers referred from Medical Readiness Events (MRE) and Reserve Health Readiness Program (RHRP) events and completing an assessment of stressors to SM in order to refer to supportive resources accordingly.
  • Ensure SM’s care is properly managed, minimizing amount of time in nondeployable status.
  • Ensures proper maintenance of SM medical records in accordance with AR 40- 66.- Medical Record Administration and Health Care Documentation.
  • Works with MEARNG point of contact for Tri-Care and the Military Medical Support Office (MMSO) to obtain prior authorization for treatment.
  • Coordinates with the SM to ensure all appointment dates and times are communicated via the designated nurse case manager.
  • Provide consultation services to other medical providers within the MEARNG pertaining to behavioral health issues.
  • Provide the state designated Medical Detachment Patient Administrator (PAD) with all relevant documentation.
  • Maintain a management reporting system to include database spreadsheets. Operates a personal computer to input, store, retrieve and manipulate data for various reports. Uses various software programs to maintain database files and prepare reports.
  • Provide technical expertise to Medical Readiness NCO’s toward identifying, evaluating, resourcing, monitoring, and determining dispositions for service members with BH difficulties.
  • Maintain a case management case load of no more than 60-70 soldiers at any given time.
  • Provide written recommendations regarding any proposed removal of a Service Member Line-of-Duty or incapacitation pay status to the COR for final disposition. Such recommendations can include confidential patient medical information as appropriate.
  • Provide information to patients about their privacy rights and how their information can be used (shall have patients sign consents).
  • Responsible for protecting confidential nature of SM’s files and medical and behavioral issues.
  • Provide expeditious support to OSS and the DSS to find SM’s that may have been erroneously identified, and/or assist with processing SM’s, which are found no longer fit-for-duty through appropriate medical and/or administrative separations.

Hours / Work Location

0700 to 1700 Monday through Friday, primary location Maine Army National Guard, 194 Winthrop Street, Building #7, Camp Keyes, Augusta, Maine 04333. However, travel maybe required throughout the State of Maine. If travel occurs, adjusting hours of operation as necessary to align with working hours at the designated place of performance, to include drill weekends as necessary.

Pay: $60,000.00 – $68,000.00 per year
