From babies to seniors, The East Alabama Health Care Authority cares for all of Alabama’s denizens. The authority’s flagship facility is East Alabama Medical Center (EAMC), a general acute-care hospital with more than 350 beds and a skilled nursing facility with about 35 beds. Facilities at the medical center include an adult day care center, cancer center, hospice, sleep disorders lab, and surgery center. Services include diagnostic imaging, physical therapy, respiratory care, and behavioral care. Founded as an 80-bed hospital in 1952, East Alabama Medical Center serves residents of Lee County and four surrounding counties in east-central Alabama with a medical staff of about 130 physicians. Geographic Reach The East Alabama Health Care Authority services those who reside in Alabama’s Lee County, as well as a handful of surrounding counties in east-central Alabama. Operations East Alabama Medical Center, which is the second largest employer in Lee County with a staff of 2,700 and an operating budget of more than $300 million, offers home nursing services in and around Auburn, Alabama, through a partnership it inked in 2009 with LHC Group. Its service area extends to five counties with a combined population of roughly 150,000 people. The two firms provide home health care to the senior citizens in the area. Seniors are estimated to comprise about 16% of the counties’ residents. The hospital authority also operates four assisted and senior living homes that offer a range of living options for the elderly, from independent cottage or apartment options to assisted living and respite care.
