Purpose of Department:
The Wellness Center provides superior and confidential physical and mental health care related to specific illnesses and health concerns. This includes triage, assessment, treatment, and referrals. The Wellness Center encourages and educates students to take action to improve their overall physical and mental health in a caring and professional environment.

Summary of Position:
The Director of Counseling directs and oversees the delivery of counseling services to students and outreach and consultation to the campus community. This includes planning, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating the quality of care delivered. The Director is responsible for managing the daily operations of the on-campus Counseling Center which also provides a wide range of clinical services, crisis intervention/consultation, training, education, and consultation to students. The Wellness Center also provides training and consultation to employees.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Develop and deliver best practice services to the campus community.
  • Act as a student advocate to coordinate required services or to resolve emergency problems in crisis situations. Exchange necessary and appropriate information with University leadership.
  • Collaborate with other offices on campus to provide support for students.
  • Evaluate clients’ physical or mental conditions based on review of student information.
  • Maintain confidentiality of records relating to student treatment.
  • Guide students in the development of skills and strategies for dealing with issues.
  • Provide mental health counseling to students individually and in group sessions.
  • Refer students or family members to community resources or to specialists as necessary.
  • Counsel family members to assist them in understanding, dealing with, and supporting their students.
  • Gather information about community mental health needs and resources.
  • Collaborate with other offices to coordinate services for students with emotional, physical, and learning disabilities.
  • Collaborate with Disability Services to evaluate, verify, and interpret documentation from various professionals to determine eligibility for disability accommodations.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Health Services regarding the management of the Center (e.g. budget preparation, supplies and equipment management, and government regulation implementation).
  • Chairs the CARE Committee (Compassion, Advocacy, Resources & Education) for students of concern Behavioral Concerns Committee.
  • Serve on the Disability Services Steering Committee.
  • Represents the University locally, regionally and nationally through counseling associations.
  • Prepare and review Counseling Center policies and procedures.
  • Works effectively with a diverse population of students, employees, families, visitors, and guests.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Education, Special Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, Social Work or related field with three years of clinical experience or equivalent combination of education and training; experience or training in time – limited modalities; and experience or training in at least two of the following: anxiety and supervision, substance abuse, group counseling, multi- cultural counseling, disability, or eating disorders.

Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Psychology, Education, Special Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, Social Work or related field; Doctorate a plus; experience in a university counseling, student health, or disability center.
