Licensed Mental Health Counselor

Licensed Mental Health Counselor

Job Overview

Please only apply if fully Licensed in FL as a LMHC, LCSW, or LMFT. You will see clients primarily in-person and some through telehealth.

McNulty Counseling and Wellness of St. Pete, Sarasota, and Tampa has grown at an exciting rate! We are now recruiting our last position for a full-time Licensed Mental Health Counselor or Licensed Clinical Social Worker to join our private practice at our St. Petersburg location to see children, teens, adolescents/young adults (up to 30). If you see children and adult population, this is a HUGE plus so please let me know!

So who are we really looking for? It’s not all about credentials…

Our philosophy is to promote balance and wellness from a holistic approach. While you will be working on a team, we are looking for someone who is highly self-motivated. Someone who is not interested in being micromanaged, but who is naturally at their best when they’re given free rein to do what they do best and that’s to provide the best psychotherapy possible in every session you have with your clients. We’re looking for someone who also contributes to our twice monthly group supervision where we do anonymous case conceptualizations where you’ll have 10+ therapists, all having decades of a variety of experiences and therapeutic specialties, giving you the best suggestions possible to help you advance yourself as a clinician so you can continue to improve for your clients. Our practice has a commitment to excellence, so punctuality is imperative. Breaking the stigma of people getting help for mental health issues and improving the mental health of our community is our mission that we take very seriously. At the same time, the MCW environment is full of upbeat positivity filled with laughs and lightheartedness outside of session. We do a very difficult job fill that can be physically, emotionally, and spiritually taxing so it’s important to know that your team and the director has your back when you need it. If these values resonate with you, keep reading!

You will be required to see clients face to face and we also offer virtual sessions through our practice management software, SimplePractice. Our practice offers services to individuals, children, adolescents, families, and couples. We specialize in the treatment of anxiety disorders, depression, self-injurious behavior, trauma, parent-child relationships, anger, divorce/separation issues, and grief counseling. All of your clients will be individual, one on one therapy, but if you need to do supplemental family sessions bringing parents or children in, we encourage it! Experience with seeing couples is a huge plus so please let us know if it’s something you’d like to incorporate seeing them into your practice. As a LMHC who has worked in many different practices and settings, I have seen how much insurance protocols, over-promising and under-delivering by bosses, toxic workplace environments and relationships, along with poor management can severely hinder our individual growth as clinicians and more importantly, negatively impact the clinician’s effectiveness in session, so it’s very important to me that you get to run your therapy sessions how you want to in every 50 minute counseling hour without any outside influence (while adhering to legal and ethical standards at all times). I’m always open to new styles of counseling, theory, and implementation so if you have something that you know would help your client, I will always encourage you to go for it! Continuing education is required so that you’re constantly the best you can be for your clients.

This position will become full-time once you reach 22-30 clients. We do incentivize a bonus for 25+ clients a week, and 30+ clients is an option. While reaching these goals are important, the well-being of our clinicians come first. We try our best to practice what we preach. That being said, we are sensitive to clinician burnout, and will adjust these goals based on your personal wellbeing and practice development.

How does the day-to-day look?

We provide you with a fully furnished office space in an upscale building in downtown St. Petersburg, one full time 40 hour a week client care coordinator who will also serve as your personal administrative assistant for when you need anything and everything while you’re in session with your clients, high speed internet, practice management software along with payment processing, the business is responsible for the 3.5% credit card fees per client, we’re ranking on the front page of Google for keywords your ideal client would search for, a huge budget for advertising and we work with a marketing consultant to advertise you as the expert in your field. All of this and much much more with all the marketing you need to start generating a full clientele list.

Your main responsibility is a commitment to excellence when counseling your clients. You will be responsible for charging clients at time of service, completing progress notes, and some scheduling depending on client preference. Your job is as simple as coming into the office on time, seeing your clients for their 50 minute clinical hour, then taking the last 10 minutes for scheduling, progress notes, and treatment planning. At the end of the day you go home with zero overhead or management headaches. I’ve created this so that you can come in, do your best job counseling, and then head home!

Our business model

Your focus should be on day-to-day responsibilities and reaching personal goals. All overhead is again, covered by the business. This practice was created so that those who are passionate about counseling can focus on counseling and counseling only.

Pay structure and incentives

The fee split from every session is 40% to the counselor and 60% to the business but if you see 50 clients or more in a 2 week (14 day) pay period the totals go to 50% to the counselor and 50% to the business. If you see less than 50 client hours in a two week pay period, the 40/60 pay structure will reinstate until the bonus is met again. My goal to have all clinicians seeing 25+ clients a week on average and most of our clinicians maintain the bonus throughout the year. This is clarified below.

MCW Hourly Rates for Clients ($150 for individuals and $170 for couples and family) all charged at time of service so there is no delay in you getting payed.

Payscale for Clinicians:

  • 60 minute individual session: $60 standard & $75 bonus
  • We offer 60 & 120 minute couples sessions: $68 standard & $85 bonus (per hour)

Payscale example (real therapists from MCW for end of year 2021):

Therapist 1 (LMHC)

  • This therapist saw 20 clients a week.
  • They made $62,400 for that year, averaging 40 clients every 2 weeks.

Therapist 2 (LMHC)

  • This therapist saw 27 clients a week.
  • They made $109,000 for that year, averaging 54 clients every 2 weeks.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics are as follows:

  • Social Workers: median annual income = $55,000, with 90% making <$82,000
  • Counselors: median annual income = $50,000, with 90% making <$82,000
  • Marriage and Family Therapists: median annual income = $50,000, with 90% making <$82,000

While reaching goals and growing the practice is important, so is your mental health and wellbeing as a clinician. I encourage all of the therapists at our practice to take time off for family/vacation as frequent as you need. It is important that you have a happy and healthy work-life balance!

Because we want to offer the best therapy, we believe in paying for the best clinicians. When goals are reached (25+ clients every 2 weeks), we happily surpass the industry standard. All of our therapists are in the top 10 percentile for salary in comparison to other counselors in their field.

Requirements

  • Must currently have an active FL license (no interns)
  • Master’s Degree in Mental Health field
  • Experience as LMHC/LCSW
  • 5+ years of experience in Mental Health field
  • Private practice experience is a plus but not required

Clients pay at the time of service and we do not accept insurance. This means that you get paid for seeing your clients at the end of every 2 week pay period. Say goodbye to trickled-in insurance payments. Our clients have the option to self-submit to their insurance companies for reimbursement.

Before applying, please understand that a self-pay private practice is much different than organizations who do accept insurance.

Once onboarded, clinician expectation is 35 client hours of open availability with a minimum of 20 clinical face to face hours while averaging around 25+ per week. We work with a marketing agency to book client-specific services so that you can work with your ideal clients!

The more availability that you can offer, the quicker my team and I can build your clientele. You are paid per client seen, so we encourage applicants to take this into consideration when applying for this position because while it may be slower for the first couple of weeks, we have a very successful marketing on-boarding process for our new clinicians that should have you at 20 clients per week within 2-3 months. This is heavily dependent on your availability that you can offer. I never want to over promise and under deliver so it’s important you’re up front about your availability from the start.

We are a family at McNulty Counseling and Wellness and we want clinicians who are looking to join us for the long haul so if you’re only interested in short-term work, please consider other places. It is required that our clinicians take an active role in building their own clientele which includes active involvement in community once a month.

We are trusted by News Channel 8 as the authority figure in the Tampa Bay Area for mental health. You will have the opportunity to be featured on NBC’s bloom once every other month, in rotation with other therapists at our office. We discuss trending topics in mental health where you can deliver your expertise to thousands of local viewers. This is negotiable and it’s okay if you don’t want to do it but it’s highly encouraged.

Before applying…

Please check out our website, reviews, and consider everything discussed above to ensure you’re a good fit. If applying, please provide a brief cover letter including:

  • Why you feel you would be a good fit for our counseling center
  • Who your ideal client is
  • Why you chose to be a therapist
  • Your ideal caseload in a given week along with your ideal schedule
  • Weekends are a plus

Finding the best fit for our practice is important to us – so finding a workable and enjoyable schedule is something I’d like for you to achieve. Some clinicians choose to work 4 days a week and see 6-8 clients in a row. Others work 5 days a week with 4-7 clients a day. Plan to see a minimum of 20 clients a week and the maximum is really up to you. I will be able to get you a full book within 2 months at the latest.

It is required you dedicate at least three nights a week (until 7pm) to see clients who require evening after-school and after-work appointments. 4 nights a week would be best and would be the quickest way to build your clientele up. If you’d like to offer weekend availability, this would also expedite the accrual of a full client list. Some of your clients may request virtual, which we will arrange through doxy.me, a HIPAA compliant Facetime service. If you feel as though you are a good fit for this position, we invite you to apply and eagerly await your application! Your primary office is the last of 7 in St. Pete and it does not contain windows but there is sometimes availability in the other rooms if this is an issue for you. It is YOUR room and you get to decorate it how you want. Please check us out on McNultyCounseling.com.

**Applicants will only be responded to on an individual basis. Recruiters, please DO NOT contact this job post. We are not hiring any interns or any other positions at this time so please don’t send us applications as they will not be reviewed.
