Sheboygan County Head Start/Early Head Start

Title: Mental Health Specialist

Reports to: SN/MH Manager

Works With: Families and Children, Administrators and Head Start Staff, Community Service

Agencies and The Sheboygan Area School District

Status: Full-Time/Full Year (30-40 hours/week) Some early evening events throughout the year

Responsibilities:

School and Community Liaison:

Performs a variety of public contact and liaison activities with community agencies pertinent to Head Start and/or the position.

Communicate and consult with community agencies in shared cases.

Family and Parent Services:

Provide direct family services to high risk families or families referred by the Family Advocates.

Plans and coordinates mental health classes for parents and staff.

Coordinates parent support groups within the program as determined by needs of the families.

Make referrals to appropriate community resources and community partners.

Work with families to relieve problem situations.

Administrative Duties:

Co-conducts staff meetings with Management Team Members.

Attends meetings, workshops, and conferences that are pertinent to Head Start and/or the position.

Coordinates and conducts with the Management Team the yearly self-assessment.

Compiles data from the self-assessment and makes yearly program improvements based on this data.

Attends two “staffings” per classroom that are conducted per academic year with appropriate

Head Start staff, as needed.

Mental Health Services

Develop and review a total Mental Health Program to promote healthy social-emotional growth in children, staff, and families at Head Start and Early Head Start.

Provide classroom observation as requested by teaching staff.

Consults with staff and parents and makes recommendations based on observations.

Make referrals to appropriate community resources for children, families, and staff.

Observes the classroom environment and makes recommendations to staff to improve behavior in the classroom.

Facilitate discussion/support groups with parents.

Leads Functional Assessment teams of children with behavioral concerns and supports and monitors the children’s progress in the classroom.

Oversees and supports referral process to local Mental Health Providers.

Qualifications:

  • This position requires a Master’s Degree Counseling, Social Work, or related field, and a registered Wisconsin Professional Counselor License.
  • Skills and abilities in team management, community planning, program development, and supervision.
  • Commitment to providing opportunities for low-income families to be self-sufficient and to the principles and mission of community action.
  • Speaking and writing skills, which enable effective communication.
  • Must be able to keep accurate records, file monthly reports, and make all necessary documentation in a timely manner.
  • Must be able to work well with adults, children, and people with varied backgrounds and beliefs.
  • Must be in good health and obtain a physical examination as required.
  • Must have Mantoux tuberculin testing upon hire.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, automobile insurances, including liability and an automobile for occasional use on the job.
  • Must be able to occasionally work irregular hours.
