Job Overview

The St. Louis Area Peer Support Specialist will act as a role model to veteran families while working with the SSVF case management team. The Peer Support will provide support to veterans in their recovery from substance use, mental illness, and homelessness. They will work with the veteran to set and achieve realistic goals to increase their independence and housing stability. The salary range is $35,600 to $38,000 per year.


RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Contribute to the ideas and processes of the ICM team
  • Use a peer-to-peer approach to build a rapport with clients
  • Provide emotional and informational support to clients as they work towards their goals
  • Receive referrals from case managers for clients who need mentoring, or advocacy, in regards to substance use recovery, mental health or other identified needs
  • Help clients become independent
  • Support clients in their recovery from mental illness, addiction and/or homelessness
  • Assist clients in connecting with VA or community resources when necessary
  • Research additional benefits that are available to clients in order to enhance client services
  • Work closely with case managers and assist them with mutual clients as needed
  • Assess clients to determine program eligibility
  • Any other duties assigned by the program Manager

DIRECT REPORTS
None

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

  • Life experience overcoming substance use, mental health and/or homelessness preferred
  • Veteran status preferred
  • Applicant must be willing to facilitate and mentor clients who are at risk of homelessness
  • Hold current Peer Support Certification or become Peer Support Certified within 6 months of hire date

  • Able to remain calm in stressful situations

ADDITIONAL ROLE REQUIREMENTS

  • Requires Class E Driver License (MO residents only)
  • Requires valid and current auto insurance
  • Requires reliable transportation
  • Work a minimum of 37.5 hours a week

RELATIONSHIPS REQUIRED

  • Reports to SSVF Manager
  • Work with ICM staff
  • Develop relationship(s) with clients and their families
  • Work with staff in other SPC programs
  • Network with federal, state and local agencies who provide services to the clients we serve
